Summer 100 (58 of 100)
"East"

5 x 5 (plein air)
Looking east from the middle. This is the old yatch club that has recently been redone.
Summer 100 (57 of 100)
"South"

5 x 5 (plein air)
Not my usual finish but there is an explanation. I took the boat out to the middle of Lake Weir. It's about three and half miles across. I anchored and decided I would just do quick sketches of each direction on the compass - south, east, west and north. This one is south. The biggest problem is that there was some decent wind out there and therefore the boat was rocking. Its not that easy to put a stroke where you want it under those conditions. I did east and then decided I really didn't want to do anymore. Oh well. It's one hundred paintings for heavens sake. You're not going to like every one.
Summer 100 (56 of 100)
"Neighbor's Flag"

6 x 8 (plein air)
The neighbor's dock has a flag they fly every day that they are there. I like it. There is usually a nice breeze to keep it moving. After I was finished everyone participated in a Pledge of Alligence with hand over heart and everything.
Summer 100 (55 of 100)
"Looking West"

6 x 8 (plein air)

Looking west from the dock at Dina and Dave's. Painted earlier this week but having problems taking photos of the artwork. I have to fix the spot in the middle of the painting. Really is a spot in the photo so it must be in the camera. I hope I can fix that.
It is not easy to paint at the lake. The biggest problem I have is that there is a lot of horizon and not much vertical. I have been wanting to work on some clouds so I will use this week to do some clouds.

Summer 100 (53 of 100)
"Background"

24 x 20
This was done after watching a you-tube thing by a comtemporary painter. He talked about not doing things the same way. When you get to the point where you know how to do something it doesn't always make for good painting. So here you go. Changing paint colors up a little. No photograph. Just working spontaneously.

Summer 100 (52 of 100)
"Florida Field"

8 x 10
This is Florida Field. Yes, Florida Field. I know. I'm a Seminole. Both of my twin boys got accepted at Florida this year. Zack, who's brain washing was not complete, or effective, decided to go. This is from a photo I took while on a campus visit with Micah. (Micah is going to FSU). After attending preview last month I have modified the standard cheer -- "It's okay/ to be/ a Florida Gator. / It's okay / to be / a Florida Gator."
From an artistic standpoint I like the orange of the rooftop against the blue of the sky.

Summer 100 (51 of 100)
"Pilot Getting On"

6 x 8 (plein air)
On the beach again. Just chillin. Every day the gambling boat goes out to the three mile limit to gamble. This day the ocean was calm and flat.
Summer 100 (50 of 100)
"On the Deck"

6 x 8
Coconut Palm tree. Lots of lines.
Summer 100 (49 of 100)
"Coming Back to Port"

8 x 6 (plein air)
Sitting on the beach while the ship approached. This is based on memory since the ship wouldn't sit still.

Summer 100 (48 of 100)
"Waterspout"

8 x 10
Went out early to catch the sunrise and there were in line of storm clouds. As I was setting up I glanced up and saw a waterspout coming down out of the line of clouds. The clouds were out about two miles. It was really interesting. Another waterspout formed but neither of them made it all the way to the water.

Summer 100 (47 of 100)
"Standing against the Tide"

10 x 8 (plein air)
Kendall was trying to stand and not move while the waves rushed up around her feet. She made a perfect model.
Summer 100 (46 of 100)
"Umbrella Shade"

6 x 8 (plein air)
Kendall and Ryann did the model work. Just a quick sketch working on figures and color.
Summer 100 (45 of 100)
"Making Progress"

I made some changes - putting some mfoe detail on the boat and added more whitecaps. Its my painting. I can do that.

6 x 8 (plein air)

On the beach, under an umbrella, chill'in. (The challenge is to create depth and interest with limited subject. Hmmm?

Summer 100 (44 of 100)
"Mangrove / John D. McArthur Park"

8 x 10 (plein air)
It rained all afternoon so everyone went to the Mall. That would be the ultimate torture for me so went down to John D. McArthur Park and found one of three sheltered places to paint. Composition was limited but this worked. The photo doesn't do the colors justice. I'll have to reshoot this under better light.
Summer 100 (43 of 100)
"Sunrise"

8 x 10 (plein air)
Got up early to paint the sunrise. Not as easy as it sounds and I'm not just talking about the getting up early part.

Summer 100 (40 of 100)
"From Foster Park"

8 x 10 (plein air)
There are a bunch of sailboats moored to bouys next to the bridge at Phil Foster Park. I could paint sailboats all day long.
Summer 100 (39 of 100)
"Morning Clouds"

Adjustments: I ran out of time on this one so I made adjustments to define the clouds.

6 x 8 (plein air)

In the morning, clouds moving in. Palm Beach.

Summer 100 (38 of 100)
"Pump House Morning"

8 x 10 (plein air)
Painted this morning.
Summer 100 (37 of 100)
"P.B. Princess at Dusk"

Adjustments: This one was done at dusk and I was running out of light. I didn't like the way it turned out so I made adjustments of darkening it all over. By the time I was finishing it I was liking the lights of the boat against the darkening sky. I think this works better.

8 x 6

This is the Palm Beach Princess, which is a gambling boat that leaves everyday out of the inlet. Unfortunately the light was fading and I didn't have the right brush to put in the ship. I'm going to paint the boat at night later this week.
Summer 100 (36 of 100)
"Looking South"

6 x 8 (plein air)
Just got to Palm Beach Gardens. Weather is kind of rough. This is a very nice place.

Summer 100 (35 of 100)
"Hot Walk"

6 x 8

Same dunes from Destin

Summer 100(34 of 100)
"Grayton Dune Revised"

14 x 18

From the trip to Destin. I wanted to give volume to the dunes and play the white against blue. Also wanted to try and demonstrate the delicate side of this habitat.
Revised: I thought the value of the sky was too light. Then of course I darkened the dunes so who knows. Vote for 1 or 2. If the first one wins, I'll . . .

Summer 100 (33 of 100)
"Pond Pines"

8 x 6
A continuing theme. But look this is one third of the way through one hundred. There has to be some repeating.

Summer 100 (32 of 100)
"Dusk / July 4th, 2008"

6 x 8
This is from a photo taken as we waited for the fireworks to begin.

Summer 100 (31 of 100)
"Looking West from the Peak of Rattlesnake"

8 x 10
This weekend my wife and I went to pick up our girls from Camp Crestridge in Ridgecrest, North Carolina. All of our kids have gone to camp in Ridgecrest and all have loved it. Micah is now a counselor at the boys camp. He got Friday evening and Saturday off, so we hiked up a mountain and watched the fireworks being shot in the town of Black Mountain. It was a wonderful experience. This painting is from a photo I took up there on the top of Rattlesnake Mountain.
My wife and I have had some great July 4th experiences. Since the kids usually go to camp during this time we have seen fireworks in alot of different places. We really like to go to Atlanta and watch them at Lennox Square. That's an impressive show. We saw them one year at Stone Mountain. The best show was probably at Boston. Just like you see it on t.v. with the Boston Pops.
The show at Black Mountain obviously could not compare in terms of pyrotechnics, but I bet I'm going to remember this 4th for a long time.

Summer 100 (30 of 100)
"Grayton Vista 2"

7 x 5
Another sketch from the trip to Destin. Hoping to be able to pull together what I've done with these two into something.

Summer 100 (29 of 100)
"Grayton Vista"

8 x 10
This is a view at the lake at Grayton Beach State Park over on State Road 30A near Watercolor. This is a sketch. Working on showing some depth. This is also on a different kind of surface for me. It is multimedia board coated with gesso. It is kind of like masonite and has the advantages that it is very cheap and lite. I cut up a bunch of pieces into different sizes and I will be working on it for this summer project.

Summer 100 (28 of 100)
"River Heights 2"

8 x 8
Working out a composition with this sketch. Went over to Destin yesterday and took some stuff to Page O'Connor Fine Arts. It is amazing how much growth has occurred over there.

Summer 100 (27 of 100)
"Spoon"

5 x 7
Still life. Just a spoon.

Summer 100 (26 of 100)
"The Big House"

7 x 5

This is what I call "The Big House". It's an old boathouse on Lake Weir. In all the years I have been going to Lake Weir, I have never seen anyone in this boathouse. It does have some pretty lines. This is just a quick sketch. I set a limit on time and just did it.
